3D Studio Max - Beyond
the Basics Series - Character Modeling
Character Modeling is one of the most difficult parts
of 3D animation, and the one thing everyone wants to learn. Where
to start and what processes to use are baffling questions. Should
I use NURBS, patches, polygonal splines, primitives, Metaballs
or what? Confusing, isn't it? Most importantly, what to use is
covered in this very advanced video featuring top character modeler/animator
Boris Ustaev. Boris takes you through building the most complex
character that everyone wants to build, "a woman", step-by-step.
This work can sometimes be tedious and frustrating, but after
you see how to approach the problem, it will be clear how to attack
other tasks. Boris gives you the secrets of modeling strange creatures
to animals to human figures with the right tool for the right
job. Build a better body the first time.

3D Studio Max - Beyond
the Basics Series -
Character Studio Advanced Techniques
Creating a 3D character is great, but bringing it
to life is what everyone wants to know how to do. Correctly animating
all the movements, blending different motions together, adding
muscle bulges, and bending joints without stray vertices can be
confusing and sometimes frustrating without proper instruction.
Boris Ustaev, one of the leading authorities in character animation
using Character Studio 2.0 for 3D Studio MAX, makes it look easy
and gives you the benefit of his experience. Boris takes you through
the three different modes that make up the general structure panel
(Figure Mode, Footstep Mode, and Motion Flow Mode) and incorporates
them in a variety of Biped creatures, using Hand Animation, Inverse
and Forward Inverse Kinematics, Key-Reduction, and Motion Capture.
He also covers creating Quadrapedic creatures and shows the use
of Physique, Key Info, and Layers. Let's watch the master in motion!

Acting for Animators
Until now, animators who have wanted to learn about
acting have had no option but to study the subject side by side
with stage and movie actors, a group that uses acting techniques
in a wholly different way. Ed Hooks offers a better alternative
with Acting for Animators, the first book about acting theory
and technique written specifically for the animator. Animators
need to know a lot about acting, but they don't need to know everything.
Acting for Animators sorts out the acting theory that animators
need, presenting it in a form and with references that are more
relevant to the animator's world.

3D Studio MAX 3 Professional
Animation
Most of this book covers techniques for character
animation, starting with Max's basic deformation tools in chapter
1, "Animating with Multiple Modifiers," to more advanced tools
like Maxscript, sliders, adjusting spring-back values for joints,
and creating constraints to control bone movement. Wonderful examples
demonstrate rigging characters for movement, controlling and constraining
movement, and working around such problems as gimbal lock.
The book assumes the reader has some experience with Max, and
it does not pause to measure your skills. Budding animators still
honing their model-making skills will find Max project files (including
the models used in the book) on the accompanying CD-ROM. The last
third of the book, "Animating the Environment," concentrates on
other types of noncharacter animation. This includes controlling
the camera, animating lights, and adding animation effects such
as particle systems to create smoke and dust.

Digital Character Animation
2
This new edition of Maestri's previous book
covers modeling, skeletal deformation techniques, and animation
timing and lip sync. Luckily, it doesn't neglect the fundamental
building blocks of good, basic character animation techniques,
to which the book devotes an entire chapter. This book
does not get caught up in photo-realistic textures, rendering
issues, or software-specific tips and tricks. It is ideally suited
for someone striving to learn the craft of character animation
using 3D tools, who wants to breathe life into each frame of animation.
